EXPLORE OUR
PE Curriculum
At Cranberry Primary Academy we recognise the importance of Physical Education to a child’s physical, cognitive, social and emotional development as well as the role it can play in a child’s spiritual, moral and cultural development. We are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of our children and understand the impact physical activity and sport has on this.
We aim to provide a broad and balanced P.E. curriculum to aid children’s increasing self-confidence in their ability to manage themselves and their bodies within a variety of movement situations. A balance of individual, team, co-operative and competitive activities aims to cater for individual pupil’s needs and abilities.
At the heart of the PE curriculum lies inclusive practice, which enable children of all backgrounds and abilities to effectively participate in PE. Our curriculum is based on progressive learning objectives that, combined with varied and flexible teaching styles, endeavour to provide appropriate, stimulating, challenging and enjoyable learning situation for all pupils. The curriculum aims to promote an understanding of the many benefits of exercise, through a balanced range of relevant activities.
In addition to the importance placed on PE lessons, we also have a wider curriculum offer, which includes the opportunities for pupils to take part in extra-curricular sports and activity clubs and competitions. Daily physical activity and health enhancing activities also play a crucial role in our offer to pupils including active lessons, active break and lunchtimes and extra-curricular activities.
INTRODUCING OUR
House System

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our House System—an exciting initiative designed to bring our school community even closer together. The system will encourage teamwork, build friendships across year groups, and give every student more opportunities to shine in their own unique way.
Throughout the year, students will take part in a wide variety of activities and competitions. From sporting events and art challenges to quizzes, talent shows, and much more, there will be something for everyone to get involved in. We’ll also be hosting special events—like the much-loved Teachers vs. Students—to ensure there’s plenty of fun, laughter, and a healthy dose of friendly rivalry along the way!
Each child will be welcomed into their very own house group and will receive a badge in their house colour. These badges are not just symbols of belonging, but also reminders that every point earned—whether through teamwork, effort, or achievement—contributes to the success of their house.
We believe the House System will inspire students to celebrate their talents, support one another, and take pride in both their individual and collective achievements. We can’t wait to watch our students step into their new roles, embrace the challenges ahead, and grow as proud members of their houses.

Our PE Curriciulm
We are committed to help celebrate our children’s achievements both in and out of school. Each week, we celebrate children who have shown great sportsmanship during our Sport of the Week programme, ran by Bronze Ambassadors. Children chosen are rewarded with a certificate and are acknowledged in our whole-school celebration assembly. Most weeks children are given the opportunity to attend a range of after-school competitions at the local high school. Their achievements in these competitions as well out-of-school achievements are also celebrated in our celebration assemblies.
Our school house system is also integrated within the PE curriculum to encourage participation and promote a sense of belonging. Children regularly earn house points through intra-house activities. Friendly competitions are held throughout the year, allowing pupils to represent their house with pride while developing leadership and collaborative skills. This approach not only motivates all children to stay active but also nurtures a positive, inclusive sporting culture across the school.
Each year the children look forward to their residential trip to Glan-llyn Outdoor Education Centre. Here, they have the opportunity to participate in adventurous activities but they will also have the opportunity to develop their life skills, like packing their own bag, organising their clothes, cleaning their rooms, domestic duties and managing their time. These small things all contribute to the educational experience of being away from home.
We have strong links with Alsager High School and Mr Morris (PE Department). The programme includes inter school competitions in a variety of sports and an additional after school sports club. This allows us to provide opportunities for pupils to take part in sports that we don’t always have the facilities for in school for example volleyball, basketball and trampolining.
Our school’s aim is to use the additional funding to improve the quality of teaching of PE, as well as engaging our children in high quality sporting activities, both curricular, extra-curricular and providing the children with experiences they may not get to do outside and beyond primary school. The Physical Education curriculum adds a wealth of cultural capital to pupils’ lives and prepares them to be able to make valuable contributions to society through:
- Developing their physical abilities through gymnastics, athletics, team games, outdoor and adventurous activities and also teaches them valuable life skills such as swimming, communication, the ability to follow rules, problem solving, leadership and also to value the benefits of practice over time to better individual capability, knowledge, skills and understanding.
- Students’ overall well-being is also enhanced through physical education and physical activity. This teaches pupils the value of physical activity through the development of physical fitness and the mastery of skills and techniques and tactics.
- Physical Education teaches children the value of being part of something bigger than themselves through providing students with opportunities to take part in school teams. In addition, the opportunity to take part in annual sports days provides them with further opportunities to participate in the broader life of the school through healthy competition.
- Physical Education teaches pupils that they are valuable and that they can always contribute positively to their own and others’ education. It also teaches them that at times there are winners and losers, and that this is part of everyday life and society.
- Physical Education also allows pupils to be aware of moral issues surrounding cheating and the need for people to behave with integrity and also ethically, without unnecessary cheating and foul play, as well as the importance of good sportsmanship
- Physical Education enables students to develop their self-esteem/confidence and also allows them to socialise and develop lifelong healthy lifestyle choices, which is the ultimate aim of the faculty.
Children will continue to wear PE clothes on their PE day, but this must be the correct Kit

At Cranberry, we have an active Sports Council and in Year 6; four children are elected to become Bronze Ambassadors. These children help to organise and run an extensive programme of inter house activities and competitions throughout the year. KS2 Sports Councillors are also given the opportunities to develop their leadership skills in Sports and Games, helping to run Sport of the Week, in addition to acting as representatives for their year groups during Sports Council Meetings.
95% of children can swim over a distance of 25 metres.
70% of children could use a range of strokes effectively.
87.5% of children achieved the entire safety award.
94% of children can perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Children at Cranberry are given the opportunity to join a range of extracurricular activities both during lunchtimes and after school. They range from traditional sports such as football and netball, and other sports such as dodgeball and hockey, to non-competitive physical activity clubs including yoga.
During lunchtimes, children are given the opportunity to play the ‘Sport of the Week’, aiming to give children opportunities to experience a wide range of different sports whilst also developing leadership skills of the children running the sessions. Sportsmanship and team working skills are celebrated through weekly Sportsmanship Awards given to children who demonstrate excellent sportsmanship during Sport of the Week.
Furthermore, Children are given the opportunity to compete at various levels including personal best challenges in school and other intra-school challenges between houses, year groups and classes. We take part in many School Games events and currently hold the Platinum level School Games Mark for our participation in competitive sport.
The School Games Mark is a government led awards scheme launched in 2012 to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community. At present, we hold a Platinum Award for the work that we do towards our PE Curriculum and the opportunities we offer our pupils.
