What is Cultural Capital?

Cultural capital is the accumulation of knowledge, behaviours, and skills that a pupil can draw upon and which demonstrates their cultural awareness, knowledge and competence; it is one of the key ingredients a pupil will draw upon to be successful in society, their career and the world of work.

Cultural capital promotes social mobility and success in our stratified society.

Cultural capital gives a pupil power. It helps them achieve goals, become successful, and rise up the social ladder without necessarily having wealth or financial capital.

Cultural capital is having assets that give pupils the desire to aspire and achieve social mobility whatever their starting point.

How do we promote Cultural Capital for Our Pupils?

We recognise that for pupils to aspire and be successful academically and in the wider areas of their lives, they need to be given rich and sustained opportunities to develop their cultural capital.

Each subject taught within the school day makes its own contribution to pupils’ cultural capital development.

Our curriculum aims to combine knowledge with experience and judgement on what pupils see. The three elements that the Oxford Dictionary uses to define wisdom. Pupils participate in a wealth of trips, visits and experiences, supported by a wide range of extra-curricular clubs.

Each term teachers plan visits or visitors to ensure children have real experiences to inspire their learning. Below are visits and visitors our classes have taken part in this year.

Olympic Day

We had an incredible day for our Cranberry’s Olympics. The children got up to so many activities that it was hard for us all to keep up. They took part in boxing, netball, hockey, goalball, gymnastics, football, golf, ping pong, dance, cheerleading, cricket, field events and volleyball. A huge thank you to all of the outside companies who came in to help us provide the children with such an amazing day. We can’t wait for next year already!

World Book Day

We have had a fantastic week full of activities for World Book Day. We’ve had our Mr Men/Little Miss dress up day, parents story telling sessions, everybody reading in class with their favourite book, and our bake sale today. A huge thank you to all the parents who came in for their children’s hot chocolate and story time sessions. The children have thoroughly enjoyed their week.

Easter Bonnet Parade

The KS1 children had an Easter Bonnet Parade, they all looked absolutely fabulous????????. The KS2 children went out to watch and applaud the amazing parade. It was a perfect afternoon with gorgeous sunny weather ☀️

FS2 have been on an autumn walk. They have loved collecting items to sort in their Maths lesson. Then they are going to make autumn pictures with their items this afternoon.

FS2 Mad Scientist Day

We had the award winning ‘Sublime Science’ company come into school The children participated in science workshops throughout the day and got the chance to make either slime or sherbet dip to take home. They also went outside for more messy experiments and a rocket launch! All the children came in their best mad scientist outfits.

Y1 Science Museum Manchester

Year 1 had a fantastic time on their trip to Manchester Science Museum. They took part in lots of amazing activities including live science shows and demonstrations, interactive galleries, and they even explored several special exhibitions.  We are extremely proud of them all at how well they behaved and represented Cranberry.

Y2 Explorers Drama Workshop

Year 2 had a lady come in the role of Amelia Earhart. We learnt all about what an explorer is and why Amelia Earhart is significant. We performed role play to help us remember what she did. We also learnt about other famous explorers, Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus and what they did.

This afternoon, we tasted some of the foods that were brought to the United Kingdom by Christopher Columbus. There were some new and unusual tastes for us all. Some were a hit and some not so much! Thank you for the effort with the costumes. The children all looked amazing!

Y3 Roman Visitor

Here are some photos from our Roman Day. We had covered the Romans in Britain during lockdown and we had a visitor from the past during the summer term. He told us about life in Britain under the Romans and what is was like to be a Roman soldier. We completed a quiz about the Romans. Also, we looked artefacts. We learnt about mosaics and had a go at creating our own.

Y4 Gladstone Pottery Museum

Year 4 had a fantastic time at Gladstone Pottery Museum last week. They took part in a guided tour of the pottery museum to further their knowledge of The Potteries, which is based on their current History topic. The children also had the opportunity to make a pot or paint a piece of pottery. The staff and children had so much fun and represented Cranberry beautifully. Well done Year 4!
