Here at Cranberry Academy we have designed our Phonics lessons to ensure they are fully inclusive to every child. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the The National Curriculum and Development Matters Framework for reading and spelling; to ensure progressive development of comprehension and writing skills; and for the children to develop a love for reading. The systematic teaching of phonics has a high priority throughout Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. At Cranberry Academy, we value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become lifelong readers.

Last year we introduced a new phonic scheme, Little Wandle, which is a scheme approved by the government. The progress that we have seen has been fantastic and we are looking forward to seeing the progress made again this year. As a school, we are constantly trying to promote a love of reading with the children. We celebrate reading success in many ways- there are so many benefits for the children being successful, fluent readers. Our main priority is to teach children to read fluently, quickly. Reading is essential within all subject areas- it opens up so many opportunities for the children. In addition to this, research has shown that having positive attitudes to reading has numerous academic, social and emotional benefits for children
